Net een abstract ingestuurd naar ‘21st Conference of the European Association for Sport Management’. De deadline was verschoven van 4 naar 9 april. 4 april lukte niet door de griep, vandaag lukte het wel. Een abstract ingestuurd op gezamenlijk werk met Marcel van den Berg. Nu hopen dat ik het ook daadwerkelijk mag presenteren.

The bidding paradox
why economists and consultants and politicians disagree on the economic effects of mega sports events but might agree on its attractiveness
When it comes to bidding for mega sports events (like the World Cup Soccer and the Olympic Games), countries and cities line up to be granted the right to host. Proponents generally stress the supposedly large, direct economic gains whereas the economic literature find these event in general unprofitable. Other economic benefits could justify hosting, but are not mentioned. Politicians tend to keep backing bids, apparently assuming that withdrawing their support leads them onto thin ice. This paper studies this paradox between economists and proponents. Both the economic and political arguments are discussed. The method used is an extensive literature review and experience with Dutch bid for the World Cup soccer 2018 (see De Nooij et al., 2013) and the Dutch debate on bidding for the 2028 Olympic Games.
